Abstract
This work deals with the experimental study of the liquid-liquid extraction of carboxylic
acids, lactic acid, and formic acid, at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The data of
the solubility curves were determined by the cloud point method and the conjugate points on
the tie lines were obtained from the calibration curves. The distribution coefficient, the
separation factor was calculated, The selectivity curve of the solvents used was plotted to
evaluate the extraction efficiency of these carboxylic acids. The results obtained showed that
1-butanol has a higher selectivity factor than 2-butanol and cyclohexanol for the extraction of
lactic acid, while hexane and cyclohexanol have the same order of selectivity for formic acid.
The reliability of the equilibrium data (conodal) was verified by empirical correlations.
