Abstract: The contamination of water resources by recalcitrant organic compounds such as 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) poses a major environmental concern. This work aims to optimize an advanced oxidation process combining chlorine and UV irradiation (UV/Chlorine process) for the degradation of 4-NP in aqueous solution. A Box-Behnken design was applied to assess the effects of three operational parameters: pH, oxidant concentration (NaOCl), and initial pollutant concentration. Experimental results, analyzed using UV-visible spectrophotometry, TOC and HPLC, showed a maximum degradation efficiency of 98.68% under optimal conditions. A mathematical model was developed to predict the degradation yield, highlighting the significance of parameter interactions. This process proves to be a promising approach for the treatment of industrial effluents containing organic micropollutants.
