Abstract: The present study focuses on the effect of salts on the liquid-liquid extraction of propionic acid from an aqueous solution using Hexane as solvent. The presence of salt introduces ionic forces which directly influence the widening of the immiscibility curve and the distribution of the solute between the extract and raffinate phases, leading to "salting-out" and "salting-in". Liquid-liquid equilibrium data for ternary systems (Water/Propionic acid/Hexane) in the presence and absence of two salts NaCl and CaCl2 at different percentages (5%, 10%, 15%) were determined experimentally at room temperature and atmospheric pressure using the cloud point method. The experimental results demonstrated the influence of the different salts on the liquid-liquid equilibria of the ternary system studied, and that the presence of salt modifies this equilibrium in favor of the extracted phase. The reliability of the experimental data obtained was successfully verified by the application of Othmer-Tobias, Hand and Eisen Joff correlations.
