Cigarettes are tobacco products made from dried, cut, and blended tobacco leaves mixed with additives, then rolled in paper to be smoked. Our study aims to evaluate the risks associated with inorganic contaminants present in tobacco. No published study in Algeria has addressed this topic before. We analyzed 25 of the most consumed cigarette brands in Algeria. The analyses were carried out at the National Toxicology Center in Chéraga, Algiers, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), a method that allows the detection and quantification of chemical elements in the samples. Our results show that the hazard indices (HI) vary between cigarette brands, with an average of 3.49. Among the analyzed brands, Marlboro Light has an HI of 4.13, GAULOISE Ultra Lights 4.43, and Lucky Strike Frost 4.12. And the average carcinogenic risks (ILCR) for metals in cigarettes are 2.43E-07 for Cd; 2.62E-09 for Ni and 3.67E-08 for Cr. We found that some brands present high risks, for example, Marlboro Red has a risk of 1.26E-06 for Cd, 1.18E-08 for Ni, and 3.90E-08 for Cr. These results provide crucial data to understand the exposure to inorganic contaminants and the associated carcinogenic risks from cigarette consumption in Algeria.
